norelem Race Camp 2017
Round 2 for the Formula Student Pre-Event by norelem
From 22.-23.06.2017 it was that time again: The 2nd norelem Race Camp took place in Steißlingen, near Lake Constance. The new location offered the opportunity to run through both the static and dynamic disciplines in one location. In addition, the teams had the chance to exchange and compete with other teams sponsored by norelem during these two days.
Participants:
- Formula Student Team Weingarten
- municHMotorsport e.V.
- DHBW Engineering Stuttgart e.V.
- joanneum racing graz
- UPBracing Team e.V.
- Renntam Uni Stuttgart e.V.
- E-Motion Rennteam Aalen
- HHN Racing
- Raceyard Kiel
- Bodensee Racing Team
- FaSTDa Racing
- Herkules Racing Team Kassel
This year, 14 of the 35 Formula Student teams sponsored by norelem took part in the event. Furthermore, there was an expert selection of jurors consisting of Formula Student alumni as well as employees and friends of the company who came to support the teams with valuable tips and tricks and provide constructive feedback. We were especially delighted by those teams who came from far away, for example the teams from Kiel and Graz. Unfortunately, not all teams were able to participate as agreed, as the vehicles were not roadworthy due to technical issues. Other teams spent half the night putting the finishing touches to their vehicle in preparation for the second day.
Day 1: The static disciplines
In addition to purely technical knowledge, additional skills are required of the teams in order to score highly in the Formula Student competition. And it was just those competences that were put to the test on the first day of the norelem Race Camp. Following the construction of the paddock and a welcome by norelem’s CEO Mr. Marcus Schneck, the static disciplines got under way. These were divided into three sub-categories: Engineering Design, Business Plan and Cost Report.
While the business plan was presented to a team of four expert jurors in the meeting rooms located at the race track, the engineering design and cost report were completed directly at the vehicle. The judges received very varied presentations, especially in the Business Plan category: From early nerves to absolute confidence, and from the concept design to the finished strategy – everything was on show. Many teams spoke (in a positive sense) of an atmosphere akin to that of the “Dragon’s Den”, which gave them the chance to take some constructive feedback on board for the upcoming competitions. At this point, we would like to thank the team of judges who handled the tight schedule with great skill and a clear head until the end.
Day 2: The dynamic disciplines
Finally! The drivers were now able to hit the race track and really let their engines roar. Acceleration, Skid Pad and a combination of Autocross and Endurance were the three disciplines that could be tested in tandem. Ideal preparation for the major upcoming racing events and for putting the vehicles through their paces. The drivers really put their backs into it and steered the racing cars with precision through the course that had been mapped out. In addition to the loud roar of combustion engines, electric vehicles also whizzed around the track. Although they were much quieter, they impressed all with their incredible power.
In addition, a workshop was held on the subject of cost reporting. Formula Student alumni and team members from the current season exchanged experiences, requirements and valuable tips.
In summary:
“With a slight tan and plenty of new input, we arrived back in Kassel. We got to spend 3 days in the best weather conditions at Lake Constance thanks to norelem. At the norelem Race Camp 2017, we had the opportunity to practice all static disciplines and to test the HRT 17 extensively. Thank you ever so much for the great organisation, the excellent catering and the numerous tips” from the Herkules Racing Team in Kassel.
We, too, were delighted without exception with the teams this year – their passion, discipline and endurance were outstanding! Despite extreme heat, the teams were highly motivated and gave everything to test their vehicles as extensively as possible. The conclusion of the participants: a full-on success.
Soon, the numerous international competitions of Formula Student will get under way. It is critical that every movement is bang on. We hope that the norelem Race Camp has supported the teams in their preparation for the coming weeks. We will keep our fingers crossed for all participants!
Thank you very much for two amazing days – great that you were there!
